This paper provides a comparison between a traditional drive with DC motor and new drives having the following motors: Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM), Brushless DC Motor, Induction Motor (IM) and Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) applied to light electric vehicles. Although designers of mentioned new motors are trying to convince the reader about their superiority, the problem: 'what to choose?' still seems to be open. Therefore this comparative study is carried out considering basic properties of drives like: - power/torque/speed range, efficiency, - complexity/reliability, weight/dimensions, availability - and price. Particular attention is paid to newly designed disc type PMSM, IM and SRM which allows a gearbox to be eliminated. The comparison is carried out for electric wheelchairs as an exemplified application. However the results could be generalised for light electric vehicles. Finally, the paper presents preferred solution for the wheelchair drive with disc-type induction motor.
