A Smart Card based system has two components: a credit card like device which a user carries and a processing unit which interprets the user queries and provides the necessary travel information and services in conjunction with a centralized computer hosting the various information databases. The MHSE contains a microprocessor and memory to perform computation and data manipulation without having to consult the centralized databases frequently. The other technology application to be considered in this section is automatic personal identification (API). This could consist of a microwave or radio frequency (RF) tag carried by the traveler, similar to the already proven automatic vehicle identification (AVI) technology. The tag would be read as the traveler entered and exited the transit vehicle, thus allowing their fare to be calculated and bills generated or an associated in-credit account debited by the relevant amount. The salient features of proposed work are as follows. Develop a neural network based model for learning user performances with respect to a travel information system. Design and implement a neural network based Smart Card based system for IVHS applications. Explore the applicability of reconfigurable field-programmable gate arrays, ASIC technologies, and embedded systems to provide an adaptable, reliable, and a low-cost solution to distribute travel information and services to highway users.
