Affordability, as evidenced by a projected 12:1 ROI for replacing EM and CRT technology with AMLCDs, means the technology buys its way on the weapon system. The greater MTBF with reduced life cycle cost make it easier for the logistics centers and depots to keep the weapon system availability rate high, thereby avoiding the need to deploy extra planes and tanks to the battlefield. And with the affordability comes the bonus of significantly greater capability of the display to work for the combatant - true sunlight readability, color capability, and the capacity to increase to large area, high pixel count displays as the basis for information fusion prior to display, rather than information fusion in the head of an already busy combatant. The epocal shift in the 1990's to AMLCDs as the prefered technology for cockpits and other military purposes may be followed by additional flat panel technologies as they mature. However, the hope that field emission or other new technology will overtake AMLCDs in the near future is a high risk strategy given the commitment military systems have already made to AMLCDs. Military and civil product prototypes for these technologies have yet to appear, and system integration work and education of users in program/logistics offices require years after demonstration prototypes. Moreover, the focus of large volume vendors is the consumer electronics industry where price sensitivity forces out features critical to aviation and military applications.
