In preparation of a project for the detection of Anti-Personnel Mines (APMs), first test measurements have been performed at the European Microwave Signature Laboratory (EMSL). The objective to detect small plastic objects does require high spatial resolution of the radar measurements, i.e. a large measurement bandwidth. Since such small plastic objects are not only distributed on the soil surface but also very often covered by layers of soils and other material, the center frequency of the radar measurements must be as low as possible, providing still enough measurement bandwidth. As a trade-off the frequency range from 2 to 6 GHz was selected. The targets of interest may have different dielectric characteristics, at least in contrast to the environment of these targets. Furthermore, from the visual impression of APMs, it seems that the main differences are not so much the size, but rather the shapes of the objects. Therefore, two additional specifications have been fixed. First, polarimetric measurements are suggested to better discriminate the targets of interest against the background clutter. Second, only the creation of at least two dimensional, radar images of the objects will provide characteristic target information. The measurement system is based on a ultrawide bandwidth polarimetric SAR. The followed approach for the detection of small plastic mines together with some examples of the resulting radar microwave images are presented.
