With the prerequisite to use low cost unshielded cable as the physical layer medium in multiplex wiring systems, car manufacturers and OEM's are demanding high performance transceiver circuits that reduce generated RFI normally associated with high speed digital circuits. In addition, such interface circuits are required to operate within the harsh automotive environment being able to withstand short circuits and transients. This paper describes an integrated circuit CAN transceiver incorporating matched output symmetry required for 'noise-free' transmission. Particular emphasis is placed on exploring typical automotive application circuits and discussing the potential cable topologies for the future. In addition, operation of the transceiver is analyzed during different bus failure modes demonstrating the fault tolerant operation of the device. In conclusion, practical measurement results and experience are compared against market expectations confirming that the goals have been met.
