It is expected that considerable growth will take place in the market for Advanced Transport Telematic (ATT) Applications over the next ten years. This will be stimulated by standardisation and regulatory processes in the areas of road safety and efficiency. A range of candidate ATT applications and their coomunication requirements have been identified by the DRIVE programme. No existing telecommunications system provides a complete solution to the communication needs of ATT applications. UMTS, however, will provide a more comprehensive communications platform through the provision of a secure underlying generic short message service with low end-to-end delay. The advent of systems such as an enhanced Global Positioning System (GPS) will also serve to stimulate ATT applications.
