Automobile manufacturers are reducing the amount of time allotted to bring a new vehicle to market. This requires the automotive component manufacturers to reduce their lead time to produce a new product. The use of rapid prototyping can streamline and reduce the cost of the automotive connector design and development process. The use of the term 'rapid prototyping' describes a range of computer aided fabrication techniques that use 3-D CAD data to generate in a short amount of time a three-dimensional, physical product. This ability to quickly transform a CAD file into three-dimensional models provides a tangible opportunity for the D/D team to evaluate and refine a design at an early stage. This helps highlight potential issues and prevent delays due to the need to change tooling. Two common methods used for rapid prototyping geometry are Stereo Lithography and Laser Sintering. When applied to automotive connectors and the specific application requirements, each of these methods has advantages that dictate the proper method. An analytical look at these advantages and their relationship to automotive connectors demonstrates their effectiveness.
