Vehicle security is a major growth area for the automotive electronics industry driven by end customer demands for better anti-theft protection. The security requirement breaks down into three considerations for electronics companies, as there are: prevention of intrusion into vehicle (intrusion detection, alarms); prevention of'drive away' (engine immobilisation, remote locking); after theft countermeasures (vehicle tracking, vehicle identification, data recorders). Trends in each area encompass technologies previously peripheral to automotive electronics, ultrasonics, IR, microwave, RF, radar, global positioning. Counter theft systems are now in production that encompass many of these technologies and systems currently under development take the automotive industry into 'state of the art' solutions to this most serious problem. This paper describes the application of current and future technologies, their advantages and disadvantages and the trend towards the most comprehensive counter theft protection systems.
