Ultrasound technology for near obstacle detection is commonly accepted as a useful support in low speed parking manoeuvres. The technical design of adequate systems is determined by a variety of different requirements, such as cost, performance and aesthetics, which are of primary importance for a successful market penetration. Various aspects concerning technology of transceiver elements, optimum sensor configuration, detection field and bumper integration will be considered together with a discussion of possible limitations. As a result of cost analysis a modular hard-/software architecture will be proposed as a basis for most flexible system configuration, short development periods and specific application requirements.
