World-wide cars, trucks, buses and other motor vehicles are playing an ever increasing role in global climate change and air pollution. As large oil consumers, motor vehicles are major sources of carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides, the precursors to both tropospheric ozone and acid rain; carbon monoxide and chlorfluorocarbons. The adverse effects associated with air pollution and the role played by motor vehicles in causing them is presented. The growing significance of vehicles produced or registered outside of the United States and other OECD countries and the increasing importance of vehicle modes other than passenger cars is also analysed. Based on a set of assumptions about the development and use of available technological advances and growth constraints, vehicle emissions are projected for the next forty years.
