There are several different technologies that can be used for obstacle and vehicle detection on the highway including radar, ultrasonic, laser, infrared, video, image processing and video camera/monitor systems. When all performance characteristics are considered, radar is usually the technology of choice for long range, all weather, forward looking, collision warning systems. The only radar collision warning system presently in production and on the road is the Eaton VORAD Vehicle Collision Warning System, made by VORAD Safety Systems, Inc. of San Diego, California. The general operation of radar based detection systems is discussed. The severe design issues resulting from the lack of world-wide standards for automotive radar systems with respect to operating frequency, bandwidth and radiated power are discussed. In addition, the driver and management feedback from users of VORAD systems are discussed. The experiences were accumulated over 200 millions miles of operation on approximately 2000 vehicles driven by over 2500 drivers.
