In the paper the authors deal with induction motors design criteria for a class of electrical vehicles fed by batteries trough electronic converters (usually current regulated PWM inverters). In particular, the flux weakening operation is the main feature considered. The design target is a wide flux weakening region limiting to oversize the motor and the inverter. The effects of different design parameters on the motor performance in terms of overload capability, efficiency and dimensions are analyzed. Since the typical duty requested to a propulsion system for urban electric vehicle is different from the most common industrial applications, and some different design choices are suggested.
