The strong influence that electronics exerts on the design of today's vehicles is well accepted. From fuel injection to instrumentation, ABS to airbags, nearly all new innovations introduced on new cars are based on electronics technology. This tremendous proliferation has forced automobile designers to re-think the way in which electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical systems are partitioned in the vehicle. Entirely new concepts have been conceived to utilize electronics in the most efficient and productive manner. These optimize electronics utilization, remove redundancies, and improve the overall quality, reliability and safety of automobiles. This paper describes the benefits of evolving semiconductor integration technologies that make the implementation of these new vehicle electronic design concepts possible, and reviews the processes with which system design teams determine the most optimal amount of silicon integration for a given solution. Finally, an outlook is presented describing possible scenarios for the future of semiconductor integration in electrical, electronic and electro-mechanical sub-systems.
