Automobile transportation societies face problems related to environmental and energy conservation, traffic accidents, and chronic traffic congestion. As a result, applications of advanced electronics are expected expand from simple car-oriented systems to systems that integrate individual cars into traffic management systems such as IVHS, based on cooperation among the government, the auto industry, and academic institutions. This paper reviews the history of car electronics with some representative examples of electronics technologies already introduced, and proposes the future direction for developing automobiles, and a new era of automotive electronics at the view point of 'Enablers & Inhibitors'.
