This paper presents new developments on optical fibers and cables for undersea systems. A new technology for fiber packaging based on steel minitube is described. Future systems with high bit rate (up to 20 or 40 GBit/s will require large effective area fibers, more bending sensitive for which the minitube design is totally suitable.
