New applications of LCDs (liquid crystal displays) particularly in cockpits will require high performance backlights. The authors developed a new type of backlight particularly suitable for these requirements. Device characteristics and predicted performance figures for specific cockpit applications are given. The devices consist of a flat envelope containing a 'fluorescent lamp'-type gas mixture. With this arrangement, the high efficacies characteristic of fluorescent lamp discharges are combined with good brightness uniformity over large (potentially very large) areas. As with convential fluorescent lamps, the backlights show an optimum working temperature for maximum light output which varies between 40 and 60 deg C depending on details of lamp construction.
