The authors company first started with separate electronic control units in 1970. Since 1980, they designed conventional systems connected by a network which 'consumes' a lot of wiring. The next step was to substitute the large amount of wiring with a simple bus system. This was also the start of the in-house electronic development in 1985. By the way, it should be noted that car wiring is a very attactive cost factor. From a cost standpoint, they have to consider electronic against wiring-harness. The following presentation is divided into two sections: Applications that make do with the current large scale integration in regard to automotive demands. New features, for instance navigation systems and guidance systems, requiring microprocessor performance comparable to personal computers. The integration of peripheral functions in different central units in order to reduce the number of small components and, as a consequence, reduce the amount of wiring. And second the applications with new requirements governed by mechanical demands. Mechatronics is what one call I/O components - in other words switches, sensors, displays, and acutators which are combined with electronics in one mechanical unit. There's no doubt that mechatronics presents new challenges for the specification of ASIC's. However, it is becoming apparent that they are suddenly faced with absolutely new requirements regarding electronics and, especially, semiconductors.
