SOCRATES (System of Cellular Radio for Traffic Efficiency and Safety) is a system which links traffic information centres with equipped vehicles using cellular radio communications to provide various mobile traffic, travel and transport applications Currently GSM (the pan-European digital mobile telephone standard) and Mobitex (the mobile packet data system) are being used as communications bearers in a number of pilot projects.
