Different measurement techniques, including encoders, resolvers, tachogenerators, accelerometers, and laser doppler velocimetry are evaluated for the purpose of measuring velocity ripple for rotor speeds of five to fifteen thousands rpm. The necessary criteria such as resolution and bandwidth are determined for the measuring device. Analysis is then developed to evaluate the merits of each device in meeting the design criteria. Various methods to be discussed are differencing, which includes pulse counting, measured elapsed time, acceleration, and laser doppler velocimetry.
