From a hardware point of view, the SOCRATES in-car subsystem is a combination of a Philips CARiN navigation system and a cellular phone. Initially the system will be installed in a few tens of cars, divided over three test pilot projects. It is therefore necessary to build a system that can be installed in a wide range of car models, with relatively little effort. This article describes the system hardware modules and the required installation effort.
