Although basic fiber-optic technologies have been applied broadly to fixed telecommunication systems for more than a decade, there are surprisingly few fiber-optic systems installed in production aircraft/space systems - and those are generally limited to simple data links in relatively non-critical applications. It is clear that an increasing focus on the key performance, reliability and cost requirements for aerospace applications will pave the way for the introduction of fiber-optic technology into both military and commercial aircraft of the future. Because the technologies which applly to the telecommunication field are the best developed, the first use of fiber-optics in production mission avionics will most likely be in the form of data buses.
