EMC has been an important part of vehicle electrical system design for over 40 years, starting with the need to limit the electrical noise radiated by vehicle ignition systems to prevent interference to domestic radio and television reception. As vehicle electrical systems have become more complex, other EMC phenomena such as conducted transients and immunity to radiated fields have had to be considered. The advent of the European Single Market has led to a mandatory directive specifying minimum EMC requirements for virtually all products incorporating electrical and electronic systems sold within the European Community. The automotive industry is to be covered by its own product-specific directive in recognition of the fact that the automotive EMC environment is different to domestic or industrial environments.
