Rapid advances in lightwave technology and market demand for cost-effective transmissions of large quantities of information have propelled fiber optic systems from laboratory to widespread military and commercial deployments. High-reliability, high-performance fiber optic and optoelectronic components are sufficiently available, as briefly introduced in this paper, to implement telecommunications, networks, and sensors for various terrestrial, undersea and avionic systems. The optical amplifiers will change the traditional paradigm by allowing WDM technology and architecture to satisfy the emerging needs for broadband multimedia telecommunications and networks. The WDM networks can provide an aggregate capacity measured in Terabits per second (Tb/s) and can operate on a LAN, MAN, WAN, or a national scale. The speed of the currently available tunable laser sources and tunable filters, however, cannot sufficiently satisfy multi-wavelength routing cross-connects, such as ATM switching matrices, and high-density WDM communications. Therefore, the development of high-reliability, high-speed (nanosecond or picosecond) polarization-insensitive tunable filters, broadband continuous tuning LD sources, switch matrix, and wavelength converters are urgently needed and shall be intensely explored so as to make the future Tb/s, all-optical networks feasible, practical, and thereby, a reality.
