Data management aboard advanced spacecraft has become increasingly complex due in parts to the many types of data present and an ever increasing volume of data to be managed. Data management has traditionally been a conservative practice however practical concers such as system size, power, weight and cost have created opportunities for the use of alternative technologies such as fiber optics. The use of fiber optics aboard the space station and the Small Explorer mission is evidence of this trend.
