Practical electric vehicles are fast becoming a reality in both the United States and Europe. Battery performance has long been the limiting factor in terms of electric vehicle development and commercialization. The advent of modern technology and widespread environmental concern has helped to provide the impetus for further EV development. The commitment and co-operation of both government and industry, through efforts such as the United States Advanced Battery Consortium, will greatly enhance the future of electric vehicles. Extensive battery research and development is already underway and increased funding will advance this work. Significant advances have already been made in the development and improvement of near-term EV battery systems. Work will continue towards the development and commercialization of advanced EV and long-term battery systems. Both government and industry have made substantial long-term financial and technological commitments to the EV industry. The economics and performance of EV's and EV battery system will continue to improve over the next few years and into the next century. The advances in battery technology brought about through the interest in electric vehicles will have an important impact on all aspects of batteries and associated electronics and devices.
