With the advent of the transputer, a VLSI device with a processor, fast internal memory and inter-processor communication links on a single chip and its associated parallel processing language OCCAM, with a structured inter-process communication facility, it is now possible to simulate the input-output response of a class of dynamic systems using modest computing hardware and facilities. The transputer-based multi-tasking controllers were used to the simulation and real-time control of a multivariable non-linear system. The system was used to the control of a 100 kg pay-load magnetically suspended vehicle. The choice of the electromagnetic suspension system is based mainly on its open-loop instability, its non-linearity, and the detailed knowledge of the design requirements (e.g. suspension stiffness).
