The requirement for a new simulation technique for chopper circuits first occured in a research program involving battery powered in valid vehicles. The power levels and supply voltages encountered in this application are very much smaller than in all other industrial or traction applications. The power loss components wich can often be neclected in high power applications are not reduced in the same proportion as the reduction in the power transmitted. In low power applications these additional loss components can not be neglected as they can form a significant percentage of the total system power. Therefore a method is required to incorporate all of these loss components into the simulation of the vehicle electrical drive system. In simulating the power electronic switching device, its performance is to a considerable extent dependant on the source and load conditions at any instant.
