This paper reviews the products, technologies and research activities of Smiths Aerospace UK divisions in the field of Microengineering over the past 30 years. Microengineering at Smiths Industries (SI) is predominantly related to sensor products and falls into three general areas - hydrodynamic gas lubricated bearings for inertial rate sensors, flexure pivots and suspensions for Dynamically Tuned Gyros (DTGs) and optical sensors for acceleration and rotary position transducers.
