Their Head-Up Display (HUD) for use in passenger cars and commercial vehicles consists of a light source, a transmissive LCD with driving circuits and flat mirrors for folding the trace of the light rays in order to reduce the required volume. A spherical concave mirror is used to create the image in a defined viewing distance and the untreated windshield acts as a reflector. One of the main advantages of the HUD ist the fact, that the driver must not move his head or eyes in order to read the information. Due to the concave mirror, the image of the HUD appears at a distance of approx. 3 m in front of the vehicle. Thus, the driver must not adapt his eyes to a close instrument and his eyes can remain adapted at an indefinite distance. Focussing and refocussing takes time and is difficult for elderly people. From their experience, the information should appear in the lower part of the windshield, which is a region with low information content. The information displayed should never interfere with the road scenery to avoid distraction.
