CCTV is finding increasing usage in many areas of traffic management. This paper reports on recent developments in the use of digital image processing for automatic event monitoring in road transport and airport surface movement control. The Automatic Road Traffic Event Monitoring Information System (ARTEMIS) addresses several requirements of road traffic management, including: incident detection, road usage monitoring and vehicle identification. Initial results are reported on congestion monitoring in freeway and urban situations using ARTEMIS. The use of CCTV to automatically identify the registrations of aircraft at London Heathrow airport is also discussed.
