The Advanced Spaceborne Computer Module (ASCM) developed by Honeywell is a general purpose space-qualified processor based on the 1750A processor design. Honeywell's emphasis in computer systems for space has been in the area of mission data processing:; this requires processing system architectures with extremely high throughput and large memory requirements. The ASCM system occupies approximately 0.5 cu ft, consumes about 25 watts power, and features dual lock step processors each operating at 3.7 MIPS (million instructions per second). External data buses provide communication at 10 Mbps. To achieve this level of performance within the size and power constraints of space applications, ICs using high level of integration and dense, high performance packaging approaches are required. The ICs in the ASCM system are based on Honeywell's radiation hardened CMOS technology (RICMOS), with 1.25 micron and 0.8 micron feature sizes in the logic and memory die respectively. In order to take full advantage of these VHSIC-based ICs, multichip modules are the basis of the packaging approach. Each MCM has been designed for high performance, with materials and processes selected to meet both the high reliability needed in space applications and the manfuacturability to ensure a cost effective product.
