The evolution of the automobile has brought with it continued challenges for electrical system designers. Throughout the 1980's the trend in the automitive industry was for increased electronics content and sophistication on the vehicle. This increase led to the introduction of intelligent microprocessors at multiple points in the vehicle (e.g, at the engine controller, anti-lock brakes, traction control). System designers have begun to take advantage of this by using the full intelligence capability available in the vehicle. To fully accomplish this, however, requires substantial information sharing between modules on a real time basis. In addition, the evolution of the driver's environment has led to the development of more sophisticate audio and video driver interfaces which can require large point to point data transfer. The challenge for the electrical system designer is to find a medium which can support the data transfer required by such applications while maintaining electromagnetic compatibility with all other vehicle systems. This paper will discuss the various media that can be used for such applications and show why Plastic Optical Fiber (POF) is the medium of choice for automotive applications requiring high speed data transfer.
