Coherent laser radars are capable of remote measurements of wind fields and atmospheric disturbances, and detection of solid and fuzzy targets over ranges of several kilometers. Over the past two decades, the capabilities of coherent laser radar techniques have been demonstrated using CO2 lasers and more recently by solid state lasers. Recent advances in diode-pumped solid state lasers radiating in the eye-safe region at a wavelength of 2 microns have created new possibilities for airborne applications of coherent laser radars. A compact and reliable coherent laser radar has the potential of improving the performance of modern aircraft and enhancing the safety and efficiency of air-traffic control operations.
