In a railway signalling system where high security must be combined with high speed and high train density, there is a need for a continuous mobile communication system. A key component in this system is the train radio. This radio must probably be a dedicated solution, and work is under way in EC research and development programmes. There is also an equally strong need for a fallback system and a system for lower train density where the balise technology may be an economical and safe solution.
