Optical and electron microscopy techniques were used to study the microstructural behaviour of ball stud and ball stud socket assemblies as used on steering systems or control mechanisms of passenger vehicles, trucks and off-road equipment. Macro as well as microstructural examination were carried out to investigate the behaviour of (as manufactured and heat treated) materials coupled with physical and mechanical properties.
