'Body control systems' refer to electronic units which control electrical functions and accessories on the body of the vehicle, for example external lights, wipers, electric windows, central locking, alarm and security, interior lights or electric seats. Traditionally such systems have been controlled by direct switching, or via relay logic. The individual functions have also been largely independent. The introduction of microprocessor based control to some or all of the body electrical systems on vehicles has greatly enhanced the functionality that can be made available, as well as giving much greater flexibility. This paper describes one particular area of automotive electronics where good specifications are highly desirable: that of body controllers. It goes on to describe the statechart specification notation and shows, with the help of an example, how this notation may be particularly well suited to the kind of problems body controllers pose.
