This paper reports on the application of a transputer-based parallel processing system for real-time traffic data collection and automatic incident detection. The task of analysing images of a multilane motorway is performed in parallel and pipelined with the task of parallel traffic statistics analysis. The mapping of these algorithms into the two main components of the system, the 'Image Analyser' and 'Traffic Analyser' is discussed, and some results of some traffic monitoring trials are presented.
