Aiming at the development of a sealed large scale Nickel/Metal Hydride (Ni/MH) battery system for use in electric vehicles, studies on the middle scale (25 Ah) cells based on a sealed cylindrical cell design has been carried out for the first time, to clarify the effects on the battery characteristics by scale up in cell size. And after improving the defects of them, followed by constructing the large scale module batteries of 6 V - 130 Ah to evaluate the performances expected for practical EV cruising. From the view point of well-balanced battery performances as to charge/discharge characteristics, energy density particularly in Wh/kg, power density and cycle life without maintenance, Ni/MH battery system employing hydrogen absorbing alloy for the negative electrodes is expected to be the most promising one for the power sources of middle term realizing EVs.
