Recent developments in snubber circuits, electrical insulation materials and accurate heat energy and thermal simulation have enabled smaller propulsion converter equipments to be designed. These equipments are air cooled whereby the train motion is used to pass the cooling air over earthed heatsink fins. The application of these developments to the propulsion equipments designed for the Hong Kong Mass Transit Railway is used to illustrate the principles.
