The limitations of cascaded amplifier systems have been vigorously discussed. Evaluations have included straight transmission, circulating loop transmission and theoretical investigations. However, few papers have addressed actual system configurations and the prospects for optical amplifier submarine systems. This paper describes the most viable system configuration from the viewpoints of demand growth, attributes of optical amplifiers, system performance limitations, and the need for maintenance and supervision. A demand growth estimation and the recent increases in transmission bit rate suggest the next submarine systems will have a capacity of 10 Gbit/s or more with a cost performance superior to that of conventional systems. The number of subsystems can be at least doubled from existing submarine systems. The configuration of an optical amplifier submarine system based on the synchronous digital hierarchy with an ASK subcarrier supervisory system is proposed.
