This paper discusses the use of high voltage power integrated circuits in automotive ignition circuits. Ignition ICs are high voltage, high current, low frequency circuits requiring a high degree of integration and system reliability. Vertical power technologies that combine signal level circuitry with common drain/collector transistors are well suited for automotive ignition. The basic features of the automotive ignition circuit are presented here. A background of the vertical power integrated circuit technology is given. The evolution of the IC is traced from discrete transistors as more and more features are integrated monolithically on to the power switch. Power packages for ignition ICs are discussed. Other uses of vertical intelligent power technologies are also covered briefly.
