Systems controlling the flight of commercial aircraft are traditionally hydro-mechanical or analogue electro-mechanical. The procedures to gain approval for flight of a large passenger carrying aircraft, by regulatory authorities (Certification), are described in respect of such systems. The principles underlying the certification procedures are identified and described. The evolutionary approach adopted in the introduction of digital electronic equipment to commercial aircraft is then reviewed. The application of these, previously identified, principles to digital electronic systems is discussed and extension to the principles described where necessary. Future avionics systems architectures are proposed which will rely on logical rather than physical partitioning. Methods for demonstrating that such systems comply with airworthiness regulations are discussed.
