This paper presents the design and application of a new tool to enable the integration of computer-aided design - computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) software in a distributed environment. This tool, referred to as the Network Environment Integrated System Enable (NEISE), functions within a previously designed CAD/CAM CASE workbench. The workbench utilizes the Teamwork product for CADRE Technologies as the framework in which the CAD/CAM Integration toolkit resides. The purpose of the tool is to ease the task of the integration system designer by providing him with integration tools and models within an integration environment. The tool is applied to integrate two large, interactive computer-aided aircraft design systems across multiple platforms connected by Ethernet. Implementation of the tools is through sockets, C, X-windows, datas flow diagrams, and structure charts. Although the impetus for the research was CAD/CAM software integration, the underlying principles and methods are applicable to the integration of other software.
