With an increasing number of motor vehicle manufacturers researching and developing electric and hybrid electric vehicles this paper describes some of the experiences at Durham in producing, in the laboratory, an integrated drive system for a hybrid internal combustion engine/battery electric road vehicle. Initially the paper describes the hybrid philosophy and explains the aims and role of the hybrid electric road vehicle. The overall drive control concept is then discussed before concentrating on the identification and control of the i.c. engine and the 32 kW d.c. traction motor/controller system used in the Durham work. The role of the d.c. traction system in overall vehicle operation and control is then described and in particular its use in vehicle movement from rest and in aiding gear changing.
