A battery charging system controlled by a fuzzy logic algorithm is presented. For load-acid batteries, the system has good performance characteristics such as proper charging rate and low gassing occurrence, achieved without needing to identify the model parameters of the batteries. The fuzzy knowledge base within the controller, which comprises the membership functions and linguistic control rules, was set up according to prior knowledge and performance requirements, and afterwards justified. Experimental work was also carried out to verify the overall system design's ability to cope with the intricate nature of the battery's electrochemical processes. The proposed charging system can be incorporated into the controller of an electric vehicle.
