Electronic cooling and fuel pumping in both aerospace and defence systems are among the many applications increasingly demanding electric drives which are compact, light-weight, more efficient, reliable, cost effective and capable of converting more power per unit weight. EMC protection is also a worrying factor. It contributes to extra cost, weight and volume to the overall drive and reduces reliability. Technological advances in the design and production methods of power electronic devices and permanent magnet materials have made it possible for new type of electronically commutated permanent magnet motors to develop fast. These are becoming more and more suitable for a variety of applications.
