This paper presents a general overview of Knowledge-Based Systems (KBS) applications for spacecraft control. It describes the main benefits demonstrated by, or expected from these applications (e.g. expertise capture and preservation, productivity improvements, flexibility, ...), and also identifies and illustrates the major difficulties associated to industrial developments of knowledge-based systems (e.g. knowledge acquisition, expert system validation, lack of specific software engineering methods, performances, sociological aspects, ...). The paper ends by pointing out the perspectives for the future.
