The concept of battery powered vehicle is not new and many electric cars appeared on the road with the development of lead-acid battery discovered by Gaston Plante in 1860. But the ICE vehicles which were found to be far superior in both operation and range, pushed the electric vehicles to the backbground. The pollution problems created by the ICE vehicles and also the 'oil crisis' around 1973 a wakened new interst in the electric vehicle. The very familiar lead-acid battery system was found to be inadequate to meet the requirements of the electric vehicle. Battery technologists have put in the best efforts since then not only to develop the lead-acid battery system but also other systems which are likely candidate batteries to meet the performance criteria. In this presentation it is aimed to see how far the various criteria have been met by the different battery systems.
