Yuasa's lead-acid traction batteries, 'Yumicron Z', have already been rated high in the field. Recently, development of improved performance batteries, 'Super Yumicron Z', has been completed. The 'Super Yumicron Z' gives an answer to requirements in today's battery forklifts, which are to make batteries compact in size with a faster speed and a longer working time on one charge. The advantages of the new batteries are a 20 % higher volumetric energy density and a 10 % longer life than those of the current batteries, 'Yumicron Z'. In this paper, the design concept and the test results of the 'Super Yumicron Z' are described. The capacity surpasses 52 Ah/l. Operational improvements are connected with increased corrosion resistance of plates, better electrode material and a new separating system.
