This paper discusses the reasons for using fibre optics in an aircraft environment, and compares the EFA optical standard with some other optical network systems, and explains the reasons why they are different. It also deals with the practical aspects of installation and maintenance of fibre optic components within an aircraft. The paper highlights the problems encountered when using optical components like star couplers, connectors, splices and the optical fibre itself. The paper also explains how these problems have been overcome, with special reference to one of the main problems, optical measurement and loss assessment.
